Working on it Wednesday – Candle Burning Tip

This weeks post might only be exciting and useful to those that are slightly OCD like me.

We’ve all been there right, you’re walking past a beautifully smelling candle in your kitchen and look over to notice it is not burning evenly. At first you can ignore it but every few passes you find yourself looking over at it again and slightly scowling. Before you know it, you can no longer smell the once beautiful candle because all you can see when you think of it is uneven wax going up the sides and a burn hole right down the middle. Not only is it wasted candle wax (and smell!) but the sight is starting to make you twitchy.

I can’t be the only one who  has had this problem right? Okay, so maybe I’m the only one that had this problem and let it bother them this much, but it couldn’t be helped. In the past I’ve purchased all those little top warmers that Yankee Candle promises will help the wax burn evenly. They look so pretty and they do work to a point but not enough, I needed to go full gorilla warfare on my current candle collection.

candle tips

My solution? Every day tin foil. I used a longer piece and rolled it around the top of the candle and down a bit on the sides to help keep the heat in. Be care NOT to wrap it around the top of the candle or let it fall in toward the flame. (See picture two) We don’t want any fires on our hands.

This has worked like a charm and I only have to bring out the tin foil every once and a while to bring the candle back to it’s nice and even burn level. Other times I can keep the cute little tops on.

Working on it Wednesday – Little Turtle

It feels like it has been forever since I’ve been able to crochet, but I’m getting back into the groove of things around here and have whipped up some projects over the last few weeks.

The first I want to share is this Tiny Two-tone Turtle by LucyRavenscar. Little O, was getting scared having to leave me at drop off for pre-school. By the end of the day he’d tell me what a great time he had, but the mornings were hard…. for all of us. To help him adjust a little I made up one of these tiny turtles (he loves turtles) and he was able to take it to school with him each day as long as he kept it in his pocket.

It definitely worked and now Carrots Jody, don’t ask me where he gets these names, has a special place in his backpack every day.

Here’s my version.

Working on it Wednesday – Back of the Door post

I’m working on getting this weekly feature back up and running. It will be our weekly chance to see what I’ve been working on and a place for you to share yours as well. Remember it can be anything you’ve been working on lately.

We’ve been busy the last few weeks. With holidays and then it becoming very cold in Michigan I’m trying to get as much done as I can before it is absolutely too cold to go outside.

One of the last projects I wanted to get finished up before the year ended was getting some hanging storage in our bedroom. Some place to store my extra purses, scarves etc. They were getting squished and lost in all the random closets I had them hanging in.

I’ve been holding off on this project because I wasn’t sure how I wanted to do it. One afternoon as I’m walking through my Mom’s garage I spotted this ‘almost’ perfectly sized piece of peg board. She said it was left overs and I could have it, aren’t Mom’s great.

Next up I bought a set of spiral cabinet door knobs, very similar to this brand and put them in at random places. Matt hung it up for me and easy peasy I now have hanging areas in our bedroom.

I need to buy more knobs so I can fill the space in more and I’d like to make a frame to go around it, but that will have to wait until next summer

Working on it Wednesday

Did you know there are only 64 days until Owen goes to preschool? … not like I’m counting or anything.

Until then it seems my daily fate rest in some form of painting with him and then at some point him painting himself. If never fails, I’ve given up trying.

celery painting1

This is us (well him) painting with celery. First we cut up the stalks to use in our crock pot meal that night then I let Owen use the end to paint for a while.

We’ve been painting with textures lately. Everything from aluminum foil to now celery.

I’m thinking of investing in this Young Artist Texture Painting Set but haven’t bitten the bullet yet. He has a birthday coming up soon, so we’ll see.

Now it’s your turn, what have you been up to this week. Remember it can be a post highlighting anything you’ve been working on recently.

Working on it Wednesay 6.15.14

I finally remembered what I wanted to share last week that I completely forgot about.

I’ve had quite a few people ask me about what the bookcases we built last year look like full of stuff. Remember this project?

BeforeandafterWell over the last year I’ve been slowly filling it. You won’t find any really cutely decorated shelves like some people do. 1. I’m not that great at “decorating” in that sense 2. We have a LOT of books 3. Because of 2, these shelves needed to be very functional for us.

Here is what the shelves look like right now

Bookshelves doneOwen took up quite a bit of the space for his books (Has the bottom six on all sides) therefore we couldn’t fit many of our own books. We still have 8 shelves full of books in our basement. I think this means I need more shelves right? Since this was so easy I’ve been contemplating a built in for our bedroom, but I’m worried what that will do to our resale value in a few years. It will make it so there is only really one place you can stick the bed.

Okay, now it’s your turn to link up. What have you been working on this week? It can be anything.

Working on it Wednesday 6.18.14

I sat down to write this post and realize I not only have no pictures of what I’ve been working on, but I’m also not quite sure what it is that I’ve been doing.

Really I think this picture just sums up my last week…. ok maybe it also displays that I have been working in photoshop if nothing else. :)

Hopefully you’ve had a more productive week than I have.

Play Group Snacks – Working on it Wednesday – Link up

So technically this was working for me on Friday, but let’s just pretend.

Last Friday was our first play group of the summer and it was my turn to host and provide snacks. To say I was unprepared would be an understatement. I was going to go totally slacker and stick out a few bowls of goldfish crackers, but ended up buying some veggies at the grocery store, already cut up of course. I couldn’t be too ambitious.

I ran into problems once I was home and remembered I recently donated my veggie tray thinking I would never have a use for one again… isn’t that how it always goes? Looks like I’ll be picking up one of these or this sooner rather than later.

In a moment of pure genius, or time crunched panic I decided to use my muffin pan for our veggie display. And I have to say regardless of it’s obviously used condition, I think it turned out nice. Definitely a functional piece for the day.

Working on it Wednesday + Link up

Well it’s almost officially summer here in Michigan. Matt and I spent the last weekend planting over $100 in flowers in our yard. I’m hoping for some pretty landscape this year without much up keep. I’m probably delusional, I know.

I put some wave petunias in my PVC planters this year so I’m excited to see how they’ll come out.

I’m also happy to report the play house we spray painted last year survived our harsh winter outside. It’s ready to go for this year and Owen has already been moving his things in (sticks, apparently the boy likes sticks).

Working on it Wednesday – Learning Letters & link up

It’s another Working on it Wednesday, what have you been working on?

Working it Wednesday copy

I don’t know about other Mom’s of three year old kids, but I am ready for Owen to head off to pre-school this fall. We’re hoping to get him enrolled in a very awesome duel program in our city, but this particular program only has 23 seats open and they utilize a lotto system which mean we basically just cross our fingers until July when we find out if we made it or not. Everyone cross your fingers with me. Anyway, not wanting Owen to be behind any of his classmates we’ve been working hard on certain topics, fine motor skills etc.

Recently I saw on pinterest where someone had written the alphabet on a piece of paper and used small letter magnets to match them up. We can’t do anything little in this household so I had to blow the project up a bit. I used a $.50 piece of poster board from the dollar store then hand wrote in permanent marker the alphabet.

Owen Letters

Then together Owen and I sit down and take time to match up the letters going over what each one is named before putting down the corresponding letter. I try to keep activities to four minutes or less when they involve learning (the amount of time most research says kids his age can focus on a given task) and so far we’ve had a lot of success with it.

So now it’s your turn to share….

Working on it Wednesday – Gallery Wall Additions & Link up

I don’t craft as much in the winter but I’m trying to get a few last minute projects done before it gets warm and I start spring cleaning.

This weeks project; adding to our gallery wall. I’ve wanted to add this piece for months but couldn’t find just the right option. I finally came up with something I like and went ahead and had Matt hang it up this weekend. I don’t love the placement but until we move and redo this picture wall it will have to stay.

So can you find the addition?

Did you find it?

I added a duel bell alarm clock hanging from a hook on the upper left hand corner of our wall. The clock is set 9:23, the time that our son was born and since most of our wall is pictures of him it seemed very fitting.

Our clock is from Ikea but if you’d like do to something similar you can find quite a few options on amazon. Here are a few of my favorites. Just click on their image to be taken to a page to purchase.
